Background Information

The Uganda Library and Information Association (ULIA) is a professional body that represents and advances the interests of Library and Information Science (LIS) professionals in Uganda. The Association’s roots trace back to 1957, when it was founded as the East African Library Association (EALA). Following the collapse of the East African Community in 1972, the Ugandan chapter was reconstituted as the Uganda Library Association (ULA). In 2001, to better reflect the growing scope of the profession and the integration of various information disciplines, the organization adopted its current name — Uganda Library and Information Association (ULIA).

ULIA brings together professionals working in the fields of library science, information science, records management, and archives administration, as well as others engaged in the collection, organization, preservation, and dissemination of information. The Association serves as a unifying platform for information practitioners across Uganda, promoting collaboration, professional development, and advocacy for the LIS sector.

As a democratic and inclusive professional body, ULIA strives to strengthen the role of information services in national development. It works to streamline, professionalize, and standardize library and information services in the country, while ensuring that members uphold ethical practices and professional excellence.

ULIA also provides a voice for the LIS profession in policy dialogues, promotes continuing education and research, and facilitates knowledge exchange through conferences, workshops, and publications. The Association maintains strong links with regional and international organizations, actively participating in global discussions that shape the future of library and information services.

Through these efforts, ULIA continues to play a pivotal role in transforming Uganda’s information landscape — fostering access to knowledge, supporting education, and contributing to the country’s social and economic development.
